Medicare was instituted in the 1960's, which passed the responsibility of elder care from insurance companies, which had been earning profits on premiums all along, and hid the real cost of health care in the national debt, effectively kicking the can on health care down the road 60 years.
It's just another form of entitlement spending which the boomer generation didn't pay for, they paid for their parents, but because the boomers haven't left anything for their children, or anyone for that matter, they've sucked up all the resources this country had to offer, subsequent generations aren't in any position to pay for boomers in their retirement.
It's important to note, boomers are receiving far more than they ever paid in to any of these entitlement programs. They're all funded at this point by deficit spending. Welcome to party, break's over.
